Barebones Living: It started with a purpose
They build relationships and connect to community through food, nature, and the pull of the fire. -- lucy
Before I review this week’s product, I would like to commend Karen on her article from last week where she referenced getting rid of stuff that doesn’t respond to the question ‘does it give you a spark of joy?’. I know we all have read the guidelines to sorting through our clutter but maybe this time it stuck with me. The phrase played in my head most of the week to the point of each thing I looked at I ask myself ‘does give me a spark of joy?’ So those free containers of hand cream that you (me) have around that do not make you happy – throw it away. Point here the ones I have received as gifts do make me happy. If you are not going to use it send it away to be donated or thrown away. So, there I feel better. Try it I promise you will feel better and accept the challenge!
This week the review is on a company that is true to their name and ‘gives back’ to the world. Barebones Living caught my attention with a few of their products, but the Harvester bag was intriguing. Click on the video under pictures from the link below::
Here you will see all the capable traits the bag performs so I started looking at other things on their site and reading up on the company. I don’t really need a harvest bag because our gardens were destroyed by the flooding rain that came through here as the plants were coming out of the ground. The bag is an interesting concept but devoted my attention to a pair of gloves and have been thinking about a knife so gave it a try and ordered both.
Received the order quickly so I was able to try the gloves this week while spreading sand (two truckloads) in the yard with the tractor. The gloves fit tight as I ordered S/M but figured they would stretch a little bit being leather. Also remember with new leather gloves you can get blisters when you are first are breaking them in so maybe put a little oil down at the Y of the hand on the inside. I like the fact that they fit vs the man size gloves I can only get at the box stores that don’t fit. See below:
The gloves make quick, painless work of prickly plants, rough soil, dry bark, and grasp wooden tool handles with ease. Barebones re-creation of the classic work glove means maximum comfort, outdoor versatility, and quality protection. The keystone thumb stitch improves dexterity while shirred elastic back keeps gloves in place. Premium grain cowhide is soft, warm, and breathable.
The knife is incredible and a little larger than I thought. I was a bit nervous that I might cut myself but after watching the video it made me overcome my fears. The craftsmanship is over the top with a combination of leather, cloth/fabric, metal, and wood that make up this beauty.
Originally designed to mimic the popular Japanese Garden Knife, hori hori that roughly translates to “dig dig”. This hearty, multi-purpose tool is built for versatility. Pound in tent stakes with the flat pommel base. Measure planting depth with the handy inch marks. Saw a branch or whittle kindling with the rust-resistant doubled edge. Made for use in the backyard, camping, bush-crafting, or anywhere you need it.
Smooth and durable walnut handle seamlessly fits with the heat-tempered 6 ¾" pointed blade for a tool that just feels good in your hand. Added twine cutter doubles as a bottle opener, so you can enjoy a refreshing beverage of your choice after a hard day’s work.
The ultimate shield for the ultimate tool, the Hori Hori Sheath unites utility and design. Made of 900D polyester with an interior liner, it weathers real-world use while protecting the blade from dulling. Stainless steel belt clip supports easy carrying and accessibility, while the strong handle strap restricts the blade from slipping or moving. Open end allows for easy cleaning and prevents soil buildup, preserving the blade for years of continued use.

Barebones has evolved from its philanthropic roots but continues humanitarian efforts and the “Do Good” philosophy it was founded on.
Bonus Product Review: Rechargeable Tape Light
Karen found this item on their website. Great idea for a centerpiece lighting source for the table on the patio or stocking stuffer. A ‘MoMo ism” – short for things MoMo taught us, always have a center piece on your table. I guess the early training we had on ‘making’ centerpieces were to keep us out of the kitchen while she was cooking. She would always put us in charge of making the centerpiece which was often found objects from the outdoors paired with something she had on display in her home.
The tape light is super unique, water-resistant extendable/retractable LED tape light for use anywhere, anytime. Wrap it around the inside of your tent, lay it across a table, or slip it into a good book. Opened slightly on Low, it creates a lovely soft, warm glow, or you can extend it to the full 18” on High for maximum brightness. Strip light features 30 individual LED lights featuring long-lasting rechargeable technology with up to 36 hours of use. Choose your string light body color to match your personality. Tape light charges in under two hours with included USB connector.
Have a fabulous weekend and explore!
