Words on a panel
Anyway you do it words make the world go around. Good, bad, or indifferent ‘they’ are powerful, influential and inspiring to name a few characteristics. The image above is from a freestanding panel that was placed at the end of a patient corridor which led to a work environment on the other side. The open area/work environment was for admins, nurses and doctors which was to exemplify the team working together for the cancer patient. This was a concept for the start of our (MD Anderson Cancer Center) Regional Care Centers that was created back in 2016. It was work I was most proud of while working there. The words on the panel above faced the work environment to give uplifting inspirations to the workers before going to the exam’s rooms. The other side faced the corridor that the patient walked down, and we chose images of nature like the one below:
And yes, that is a red accent wall, always a no no in hospital design. We broke barriers.
The corridor was where the patients were directed for their treatment/exam.
Words and artwork are important. Check out Austin Kleon column and his view and practice with a 5 Year Journal (Commonplace Diary) about words and quotes. I changed my practice and started a book of quotes. This will help my sketchbook from looking like a book of words and go back to drawing exercises.
A page out of Austin Kleon’s 5 Year journal.
5 Things to share:
1. Hurricane season and tracking models. Curious about a popular one which conjures up an image of a group of weather people in a dark castle in Europe coming up with hurricane tracks.
European Ensemble Model - The European Ensemble Model, also known as ECMWF-ENS or EC-ENS, is a weather forecasting model from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). It's considered one of the most reliable models available. With the close (can’t be soon enough) of the hurricane season we have learned to rely on this modeling for weather reporting. Ensemble forecasting is a method used in or within numerical weather prediction. Instead of making a single forecast of the most likely weather, a set (or ensemble) of forecasts is produced. This set of forecasts aims to give an indication of the range of possible future states of the atmosphere (Wikipedia).
Thought I would try and find a humorous image of this group that is behind the ‘curtain’ but stayed with the formal approach:
ECMWF - the signing of the documents - Brussels. The first draft of the ECMWF Convention was considered on 9 and 10 December 1971, with 32 senior representatives from 14 of the 18 founding States attending. The Convention was signed in 1973 and came into force on 1 November 1975.
Its creation set up the Centre as an independent intergovernmental organization.

5. Ganbatte! The Japanese Art of Always Moving Forward – words of wisdom
"Ganbatte!" by Albert Liebermann explores the Japanese concept of persistence and resilience in the face of challenges, translating the term into practical advice for achieving success and fulfillment. Book link in highlighted area above.
Here are ten lessons from the book:
1. Perseverance Is the Key to Success: The core of Ganbatte is the idea that continuous effort, no matter the obstacles, is crucial to achieving long-term success. Persistence is valued more than talent or luck.
2. Focus on Process, Not Just Results: Success is not just about reaching the goal, but about embracing the journey. Focusing on improving your skills and staying consistent in your efforts leads to meaningful achievements.
3. Small Steps Lead to Big Progress: Instead of being overwhelmed by large goals, break them down into smaller, manageable tasks. Incremental progress can lead to significant outcomes over time.
4. Resilience in the Face of Failure: Ganbatte encourages seeing failure as a learning experience. Each setback is an opportunity to grow and come back stronger, rather than a reason to give up.
5. Cultivate Patience: Success doesn’t happen overnight. The Ganbatte mindset requires patience and a long-term perspective, understanding that persistence over time brings results.
6. Stay Committed to Your Purpose: Having a clear sense of purpose is essential for enduring difficulties. Knowing why you’re striving for a goal helps you stay motivated through tough times.
7. Discipline Beats Motivation: While motivation can fluctuate, discipline and routine are what keep you moving forward. Rely on habits and structure to stay productive even when motivation wanes.
8. Adaptability Is Key: Ganbatte doesn’t mean blindly pushing forward. It’s important to be flexible and adapt your approach when necessary, finding new ways to overcome challenges without losing sight of your goal.
9. Master Your Craft: Excellence comes from dedicating yourself to mastering your craft. The Japanese concept of Kaizen—continuous improvement—is closely tied to Ganbatte, encouraging you to always strive for growth.
10. Find Strength in Community: Success is often a collective effort. Surround yourself with supportive people who share your values and encourage you to keep going when times are tough.
These lessons reflect the essence of Ganbatte! —a mindset of determination, resilience, and continuous improvement that can be applied to any area of life. By adopting this philosophy, individuals can achieve their goals and thrive despite challenges.
Couldn’t help myself but here is a carry-over from Halloween!
